PERCUSSION 25 To explain the altered percussion sound when the stomachreflex is elicited, one must have recourse to the Skodaicinterpretation of the condition which exists when dulnesssupplants tympanicity. The reflex in question causes thegastric walls to become tense, thus putting the air or gaswithin them under increased tension, and for this reasonwe have the physical elements necessary for the transitionof a tympanitic to a dull sound. The stomach reflex ismediated through the vagus which is the chief autonomicnerve innervating the viscera. A tropin paralyzes the motor endings of the vagus. Aninjection of gm. (gr. 1-60) of the latter drug, will mani-fest its action within 30 minutes and disappears in from ito 3 hours. During the full physiologic action of the drug, the stomach reflex cannot be elicited. The vagus is moreactive in middle life th
