World War I — Cossacks, respected and feared in the eastern theatre of war as the Uhlans are in the western field. Cossacks are members of a people of southern Russia and Ukraine, noted for their horsemanship and military skill. During WWI, the Cossacks formed 57 cavalry regiments–approximately 100,000 horsemen.
