Measures. 56 : 10 = 100 Grains of Chlorine. Each degree containing only half a grain of chlorinated lime, this, therefore, contains per cent, of available chlorine. z.^ gram-mes of the chlori-nated lime aremixed with about6 ounces of wa-ter, to which of po-tassium iodide, 60drops of concen-trated hydrochlo-ric acid, and a lit-tle mucilage ofstarch, have beenadded. To thismixture the test-solution of sodi-um hyposulphite(page 63) is added, from a burette(Fi^. 53), untilthe, appearance ofWv bluish tint ofthe mixture indi-cates the termina-tion of the test. If the samplecontains 30 percent, of obtainablechlorine, 100 cu-bic centimetres ofthe test-solution will be required. For instance, as 248 units(in this instance, centigrammes) of sodium hyposulphite indi-cate the presence of 355 units (centigrammes) of chlorine, of the former, the quantity contained in 100 cubic cen-timetres of the test-solution, indicate grammes of Fia. 53. ? o CARBONEUM. 173 If 100 cubic centimetres of the test-solution have been used, therefore, grammes of chlorine is obtainable from of the chlorinated lime ; and if yield ofchlorine, 100 grammes will yield grammes. Samples of the best commercial bleaching-powder contain,on an average, about 35 to 36 per cent, of available chlorine. CARBONEI SULPHURATUM. ALCOHOL of Carbon. Carbon Bisulphide.
