Conjunctivitis. Close-up of the left eye of a patient suffering from acute conjunctivitis. There is also periorbital oedema (swelling) around the affected eye. Conjunctivitis, otherwise known as \pink eye\", is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate mucous membrane covering the front of the eye & insides of the eyelids. The conjunctiva becomes red, swollen and may discharge water or pus (as seen here). Conjunctivitis is caused by bacterial or viral infection, allergy, physical or chemical irritants. Bacterial infections respond to antibiotic eye drops. Uncomplicated conjuncti- vitis is generally not serious and does not usually affect vision."
