Pandora and the Box

According to Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. The king of gods, Zeus, ordered her creation as his revenge on men and sent her as a wife to Prometheus, brother Epimetheus, with a box that he told her not to open under any conditions. But her curiosity won, and she opened the box, letting fly out all the evils that afflict humankind. According to the legend, by the time she closed the lid, only Hope remained inside. This 1902 drawing is a fanciful interpretation reflective of the time period of Pandora and shows her overwhelmed by her curiosity and about to open the box.
