The Aero Club of New South Wales is in negotiation with the Federal authorities with the object of starting a school for pilots. Queensland is not behind New South Wales, for by next Easter there will be a school for training aspirant aviators in Brisbane. But here it has been left to private enterprise to carry out the project. The prime mover is Mr. E. Beckman, of the Ascot garage, the proprietors of which were the first registered owners of aeroplanes in Brisbane. Foreseeing the possibilities of civil aviation in Queensland, Mr. Beckman went to England with a skilled ground mechanic, and there purchased several aero engines and metal fittings for aeroplanes. QUEENSLAND WOOD. Returning last August, he set to work to build a complete machine, working in the Ascot garage. He acted on the assumption that the best wood to withstand the climatic conditions here is the wood that grows here, and accordingly decided to use Queensland timbers, selecting maple, yellow wood, and cudgery. The struts, however, are of American spruce, but it is possible that a Queensland wood will eventually be found sufficiently light and strong for this purpose. Mr. Beckman's first aeroplane is now copmlete, and is housed in the Eagle Farm aerodrome, where it looks very handsome in new fabric covered with cellulose aluminium dope. It is fitted with a 130 Clerget engine and has dual control for instructor and pupil. It has the distinction of being a locally-made machine, as far as it is possible to manufacture an aeroplane in Brisbane. By Easter the second machine, now being made at the Ascot garage, should be ready, and the school will be ready t
