The amount of carbonic anhydride produced b\an adult in an hour has been proved b}- careful ex-periments to be .6 cubic feet, hence if a room con-tains 6,000 cubic feet he will pollute the air in it ina ratio of .6 to 6,000 i. e. i to 10,000. If the air is tobe kept at this standard of purity it is necessary tosuppl} 6,000 feet of fresh air per hour for him tobreathe. The normal proportion of impurity existing inthe air, viz. four parts per 10,000, should be addedto this, which would give the total pollution of theair per hour ; from which deductions the writer hasprepared the table near the end of this chapter^ towhich the readers attention is called.
