The thickness of the walls, about 4 ft., indicate that the remains are at least as early as the 12th century. Several tiles of the 13th and 14th centuries were found on the site. One of these, of the later date, has a vigorously drawn hart upon it. The church of ST. NICHOLAS existed in 1291, when the Prior of Wilford (Kent) had a pension of £1 in it.** The advowson of the rectory belonged to the alien priory of Wilford,85 and hence came to the St. Nicholas was parochial, but the extent of the parish is unknown.
