Three mounted knights in armor for jousts and courses.

Three mounted knights in armor for particular types of tournament: course with full arm-armor (garde-bras) with great helm (heaume), course with round shoulder armor (rouelle) and small shield (targe), and a joust with coronet spear. In the course, the knight aimed his lance at a particular spot on the opponent's breastplate - when this button was hit, a metal plate was shot into the air above the knight. Note the lance tips of the coursers, and the lance with coronet point of the joust knight at right. Handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796)
