A statue of Major General James B. McPherson (1828 – 1864), a Union General in the Civil War. He was killed at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1964. An inscription on the eastern side of the base reads: "Erected by his comrades of the Society of the Army of the Tennessee." The statue is the centerpiece of McPherson Square in northwest Washignton DC, bounded by K, I, 15th streets and Vermont Ave.
