View SE of the Tolman (Tolmen), a large sloping block of granite with a circular hole suspended over the North Teign River, Dartmoor, Devon, England, UK. Passing through the hole (c 3ft across) is said to cure or protect against rheumatism, & it was once part of a gruelling penance imposed on "Faithless wives and wantons" along with Cranmere Pool & the Scorhill & Grey Wethers stone circles. Some believe the existence of the holed stone attracted the building of Bronze Age monuments nearby. The hole & two other depressions are water worn, but prehistoric humans could have helped nature along. There is a long tradition of crawling through holed stones to affect cures, bring good luck & symbolise rebirth.
