NEW-YORK ASYLUM FOR THE DEAF AND DUMB. The American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb,established at Hartford, in the state of Connecticut,in 1815, is probably within the recollection of mostof our friends and readers. It has been ably con-ducted, and its utility has been extensively experi-enced. A great number of our unfortunate fellow-beings, in different parts of the country, who aredeaf and dumb, have received incalculable benefitsfrom it. It is still in high reputation, and well de-serving the support of the public. The Institution of New-York, for a similar humaneand commendable purpose, was incorporated in 1817,and the teaching of the deaf and dumb was began in1818. Such institutions are an honor to our country,and to humanity; and we deem it our duty to noticeall such efforts for the relief and improvement of theunfortunate of our race. The building for the Asylum in New-York, of. NEW-YORK ASYLUM. 215 which we now present a view, was erected in 1829,and a fund for the support of the institution has beenformed, by a grant from the Legislature, and by pri-vate donations. For a few years after 1818, when itwas first opened, the institution was far less useful orfamed than it now is. A great reformation in thegovernment and the mode of instruction in the insti-tution, has been made within three or four of the present teachers is a gentleman of abilityfrom Paris; and the other from the Asylum at Hart-ford ; where he had become qualified, by long prac-tice, to teach others. The Asylum is situated on an eminence, threemiles and a half north of the City-Hall, New-York ;and west of the Harlem railroad.
