Whitesell also awarded 11 Navy Air Medals and 18 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals to other HSC-3 Sailors for exemplary volunteer action in support of nighttime aerial firefighting operations while battling the fire aboard the former USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on July 12, 2020. Whitesell also awarded 11 Navy Air Medals and 18 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals to other HSC-3 Sailors for exemplary volunteer action in support of nighttime aerial firefighting operations while battling the fire aboard the former USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) on July 12, 2020. In total, HSC-3 executed 1,649 aerial drops, resulting in 545,076 gallons of water dropped on Bonhomme Richard, and flew a combined flight hours amongst 26 crews.
