Tripp, and in1889, when the 95th quorum of Seventywas organized, he was chosen secretaryand treasurer, and later became a presi-dent in that quorum, w^iich position lit- BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA. 577 still occupies. When the BrlghamYoung Academy expedition was organ-ized in 1900, to go into Central andSouth America on an exploring trip^Bro. Beckstead was chosen as secondcounselor to Pres. Benjamin Cluff, jun.,and made captain of the company; hewas also given charge of the packingoutfits ana the animals. Being hon-orably released, he returned home be-. fore the trip was completed, on accountof illness in his family. Elder Beck-stead has been a true pioneer, havingaided very materially in the develop-ment and upbuilding of this westerncountry. He has assisted in diggingcanals, clearing ground, and buildinghouses and towns. In Church work, hehas taken an active part in the quorumsof the Priesthood, as well as in theauxiliary organizations. He is thefather of nine children—six boys andthree girls. TURNKR. Jaine» Finch, a presidentof the 33rd quorum of Seventy, wasborn Oct. 15, 1841, in the county of Kent,JSngland, son of James Turner andMary Ann Finch. He was baptized in1852, in Kent, and emigrated with hisparents to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. Soon afterwards the family set-tled in Little Cottonwood Ward (nowUnion), where thye tried farming in 1855, but lost their crop
