New Varieties —^'ot all new varieties that are being constantly introduced are improvements but many of them are, and some prove to be magnificent triumphs of horticulture, to know which is well worth a trial of them all. In this age of close competition it becomes necessary for the fruit grower, if he would make the most of his opportunities, to make himself at once thoroughly acquainted with all varieties that '^i^^^^gjj-:::.;^e£g^''^^^^^^^^^^ ^ are at all suitable for his locality. To which end he will give each kind a fair trial in a small way as fast as it is introduced and then plant largely of such as he discovers to be most desirable and profitable. It is our practice to subject each and every candidate for public favor to a trial on our own grounds and to freely give the result to every- one interested. This, however, though valuable in a general way,cannot take the fjlace of a trial on everyone's own grounds, for the reason that a vari- ety which may prove hardy here may not be so in another section having a severer climate or in a location of greater exposure, or one tender here may be hardy enough in a milder climate or more protected situation.
