Blue sky white clouds semi-desert mountain valley portrait of Aconcagua, Andes Mountains, summit Uspallata Pass, Chile

The Uspallata Pass links the Argentinian wine-growing city of Mendoza with the Chilean capital, Santiago. It has been used since Inca and Spanish Colonial times as an east-west routeway over the Andes. In 1817 the pass was used by San Martin's Army of the Andes in a campaign to free Chile and ultimately Peru from Spanish Colonial Rule. Aconcagua, highest peak in both the Andes and Western Hemisphere (at 22,835 feet or 6960 metres) is visible from the pass.
