Cotopaxi. Cotopaxi is a stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, about 75 kilometres south of Quito, Ecuador. It is the second highest summit in the country, reaching a height of 5,897 metres. Stratovolcanoes are tall, conical volcanos composed of many layers of hardened lava and volcanic ash. Cotopaxi has an almost symmetrical cone and one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world. Numerous valleys formed by powerful lahars (mudflows) surround the volcano.
