Original WW1 era postcard of group of Royal navy sailors slinging hammocks on a ship, lots of characters, one man is smoking, dated and posted from Portsmouth on October 5th 1916, just before the end of the war,
The writer of the postcard tells his wife that he has changed ships and is now on a mine layer & sweeper - possibly the one in this photo. He says he will be home at Christmas. Hammocks were used for hundreds of years before bunks and beds became common. Seafarers would sling their hammocks in some convenient place and, when not in use, they could be easily stowed away. If a sailor died, his body was stitched up in his hammock and buried at sea. Hammocks were used on both Merchant and Royal Navy ships until the 1950s.
