Georges-Pierre Seurat (1859-1891 Sunset oil on panel. This is one of the many 'croquetons' (little sketches) Seurat painted in the region around Paris in the 1880's. They are predominantly landscapes, painted directly onto cigar-box lids. Such lids were easy to carry and the red-brown colour of the wood provided a warm ground ideally suited to landscape subjects.
