ASPHYXIA NEONATORUM. 329 piece of cotton saturated with liquor ferri subsulphatis (solutionof the subsulphate of iron, to be had of any druggist). Thephysician should be notified promptly, and if by the time hearrives the use of the styptic has not effectually controlled theoozing, he will doubtless pass two long needles at right anglesto each other through the base of the umbilicus and apply atight figure-of-eight ligature (see Fig. 131). The needlesmust be removed at the end of six or eight hours and an anti-septic dressing applied. If this form of bleeding is at all severeand persistent, recoveries seldom take place and even if the um-bilical hemorrhage is controlled, bleeding may appear in the nose, mouth, stomach, intestines, or abdominal cavity; or the infantsbody may develop purpuric spots at various points. The injuries to the new-born infant are those which occurduring labor, either from pressure or from manual
