The intention of Pope Leo was, by a sort of reversal of the actof Constantine the Great, to bring back from the East the seat ofthe imperial court; but what he really accomplished was a resto-ration of the line of emperors in the West, which three hundredand twenty-four years before had been ended by Odoacer, whenhe dethroned Romulus Augustulus.^ We say this was what he 1 See Ancient Hisioiy, 2d Rev.
