An early 20th century view of Clifden, a coastal town in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. Often referred to as "the Capital of Connemara", it gained prominence after 1905 when Guglielmo Marconi built his wireless telegraphy station four miles (6 km) south of the town, the first point-to-point fixed wireless service connecting Europe with North America. Then in 1919 Alcock and Brown crash landed after their first non-stop transatlantic flight close to Marconi's station.

This Photo Chrome image was shot around 1900. In the interests of transparency (no pun intended) the image has been cleaned, sharpened and enhanced. The original sky was bleached out and a new sky has been carefully added.
