Atkinson, in a paper reported in theJournal of the Royal United Service Institution, afterstating that the Royal Regiment of Malta was formed in1805, says that it did not figure with conspicuoussuccess when defending Capri in 1808, and its establish-ment was reduced to 1,000 m 1809, to 400 in 1810, andthe next year it disappeared from the lists. He adds— Associated with the Royal Regiment of Malta in theloss of Capri, from which unfortunate episode theyemerged without any loss of reputation, were theCorsican Rangers. This regiment was formed atMinorca out of the Corsicans who had attached them-selves to the British when the island of Minorca wasevacuated. Sir Hudson Lowe was commissioned inOctober, 1803, to raise the corps, which was alreadyover 500 strong by the
