E. coli bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of rod-shaped, Gram- negative Escherichia coli bacteria inhabiting the intestinal villus. E. coli. are part of the normal intestinal flora of both human & animals. The bacteria (yellow) are clustered in folds (pink) which cover the surface of a single micro- villus. The intestines consist of many villi which absorb digested food particles into the bloodstream. Intestinal bacteria such as may, under certain conditions, increase their numbers leading to infections such as gastr- oenteritis. Magnification: x1400 at 5x7cm size. 5000 at 10x8ins
