Ciliary body and lens. Artwork of the ciliary body (red) and lens (white) of the eye, seen from the back of the eye. The ciliary body lies behind the iris. It supports the lens and produces the aqueous humor, the clear fluid that fills the front of the eye. Radiating from the ciliary body are small fibres known as zonular fibres, which hold the lens in place. The lens focuses images on the retina. The ciliary body contains muscle fibres. When the ciliary body contracts the zonular fibres relax and the lens thickens, enabling it to focus on near objects. When the ciliary body relaxes the zonular fibres contract and the lens thins, enabling it to focus on distant objects.
