General Bragg led a large Confed-erate army through the Appalachian Valley into Kentucky,hoping to rally the people of that state to the Southerncause. He was checked in the neighborhood of Louis-ville. He then retreated into Tennessee, where at the closeof the year he fought the desperate battle of Murfreesboro,but failed to dislodge the Federals from the central partof the state.
