The monumental fountain, built by Alexander Severus ( 208-235) and located at a fork between the Via Tiburtina and the Via Labicana. It was constructed as a two-storied façade with a wide central niche and arched openings on each side; its design thus evokes a triumphal arch. Statues occupied the niches. Two sculptures known as the “Trophies of Marius” recycled from an earlier triumphal monument built by Domitian still survive and can be seen atop the staircase leading up to the Piazza Campidoglio, Rome, Italy.
