Construction of the Ouse Valley Viaduct commenced by the London & Brighton Railway company in 1839. Estimated 11 million bricks were used, mostly shipped up the river Ouse via New Haven from the Netherlands, the cost of the viaduct reportedly £38,500 equivalent to about £ million in 2022. The viaduct has 37 identical arches.
