The Banian, or Indian fig tree, one of the most beau-tiful and delightful specimens of vegetation that the earthproduces, is a native of several parts of the East Indies,and immediately attracts the attention of a traveller bothby its extraordinary appearance, and as a shelter from thescorching rays of the sun. As though it were intended toflourish alone, and independent of every other tree, itforms of itself a grove, affording a most delightful retreatto the heated and fatigued pedestrian.
