In 1903 he re-ceived from the University of Heidelberg thehonorary diploma reconferring the title of Doctorof Philosophy after the lapse of fifty years, in recog-nition of the scientific worlc accomplished since thedoctorate was first conferred in 1853. He wasmarried in i860 to J. Alexandrina Bello, of Madrid,Spain. FREDERIC HENRY GERRISH was bornin Portland, Maine, March 21, 1845, son of Oliverand Sarah (Little) Gerrish. He traces his paternalancestry to William Gerrish, of Bristol, England,who came to Massachusetts in the early part of. FREDERIC HENRY GERRISH the seventeenth century. On the mothers sidehe is descended from Major Richard Waldron, oneof the Colonial governors. He received his earlyeducation in the common schools of Portland,Maine, and entered Bowdoin College, where hewas graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1866, and Masterof Arts in 1869. In the latter year he also tookthe degree of Doctor of Medicine in the MedicalSchool of Maine. In 1873 he was appointed Profes-sor of Materia Medica and Therapeutics in his AlmaMater, occupying this chair till 1882, when he wasmade Professor of Anatomy. This position hefilled till 1905, when he was transferred to the chair of Surgery. In addition to the foregoingpositions he served as Lecturer on Therapeutics,Materia Medica, and Physiology at the Universityof Michigan in 1873-1874, and as professor in thesesubjects the following year.
