Transcription factor complexed with DNA. Computer model showing a max protein (green) bound to a strand of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, pink). Transcription factors are proteins that bind to specific sequences of DNA and control the transcription (transfer) of genetic information from DNA to RNA (ribonucleic acid). Max is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper (bHLHZ) family of transcription factors, and is involved in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis (programmed cell death).
