The first Meeting Housewas built in 1694. In 1716 orders were given for the erection of anew Meeting House, which was finished some time between 1716 and1719 and is still standing on Broadway opposite the Town Hall. In 1672 George Fox, the Founder of the Society of Friends, visitedFlushing and was the guest of John Bowne. Fox preached in the open 13 FLUSHING AND VICINITY air under the spreadingoaks, the site of which ismarked by a stone.
