American troops, moving in at Saipan aboard a Coast Guard-manned landing boat, view for the first time the battleground which awaits them--a long, flat beach backed by thick-foliaged trees and a high ridge from which the Japs will rain murderous mortar fire around their foxholes. Black smoke curls from a burning munitions dump, hit in the terrific naval barrage which preceded the attack. This was the battleground, but not for long, as the determined soldiers and Marines pushed northward across the island.
