CHOLESTEROL MOLECULE
Cholesterol (a fat) is found in meat, organ meats, eggs, dairy products. Cholesterol is also synthesized by the liver. It is involved in many metabolic pathways, particularly the synthesis of hormones. Cholesterol is degraded in the liver into bile acids (which facilitate digestion of fat). When cholesterol circulates in the bloodstream, it is associated with proteins in the form of lipoprotein. These lipoproteins can be divided into two categories: low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are very rich in cholesterol and create fatty deposits on arterial walls (atheroma); high-density lipoproteins (HDL) remove cholesterol from the arterial wall and bring it back to the liver where it can be reused.
