Some interesting descrip-tions of such work are given by Dr. Maitland, in The Dark Ages; hetranslates an autobiographical passage of Othlonius, a monk at Ratisbon,in the nth century. Othlonius commences by stating how God hadhonoured him with a remarkable facility for writing, as a child ; and inspite of his acquiring a habit of holding his pen in a wrong manner, hegoes on to state how he laboured hard and successfully at writinguntil it affected his eyesight, and enumerates some of his labours :— Iwrote nineteen missals—ten for the abbots and monks in our ownm
