Guarding the ancient highway to Damascus - a sentry's view from the guard post at Nimrod's Castle, Golan Heights, Israel

Apparently built during the Crusader era (11th century ), this enormous fortified castle overlooks one of the most strategic conduits from modern-day Lebanon to the Jordan River Valley and Syria. Qal`at Nimrud, or Nimrod's Castle, is a large, sprawling building on a narrow spur overlooking the remains of Crusader Banias. The castle played an important role in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, during the power struggle between the Crusaders and the Muslim Kingdom of Damascus.
