This lighthouse is the second oldest in Maine, and the 11th oldest in the USA. The US Coast Guard maintains the active beacon. It was established in 1808 under the orders of President Thomas Jefferson. It has undergone various renovations over the years. It was automated in 1986, and a new lantern room was built. Tourist can visit the lighthouse at various times during the year via tours.
