Coconut fibre production. Close-up of a bundle of coconut (Cocos nucifera) husks used to produce coconut fibre, in Zanzibar, Tanzania. In Zanzibar, coconut fibre, or coir, is used to make rope, floor mats, doormats, brushes, and mattresses. Coconut husks are soaked in water for up to six months to swell and soften the fibres so that they can be removed and separated. Photographed in Jambiani, Zanzibar, Tanzania.
