Mr. Coudert soon achieved fame as a brilliant lawyer,and his appearance as counsel in important casesalways served to arouse the interest of the public atlarge, as well as of his professional brethren. Ininternational law Mr. Coudert is particularly wellread, and on several occasions this knowledge hasbeen availed of by the Government, the most recentbeing in 1S93 when he was selected, together withEdward J. Phelps and James C. Carter, to act ascounsel for the United States in the Behring Possibly the greatest recognition of hisability and standing as a lawyer is to be found in. FREDERIC R. COUDERT the regard in which he is held by his Coudert has been President of the Bar .Associa-tion of the City of New York and represented thebar of the State in a remonstrance before the Legis-lature against the passage of the Civil Code.
