Thevast deposits of limestoneand rich iron ore soon gavethe state a preeminence inthe production and manufacture of iron that has never beenquestioned. This preeminence was assured after the openingof the mines of soft coal in the western part of the state, about1830, permitted the cheap production of coke. The iron in-dustry thereafter had two centers, one in the neighborhood ofReading and the other near Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh districtproduces far more iron and steel than any other region in theworld. To-day Pennsylvania produces half the pig iron in theUnited States, and its value is more than that of all the gold, silver, lead, and zinc products in the country. Coal. Anthracite was discovered and used by individualsbefore the Revolution, but not until about 1825 did it come into. Canal along the Susquehanna, atShickshinny, Luzerne County The cheap and rapid transportation serviceof the railroad at the left of the picture hastaken away most of the business of the canal.
