Bodiam Castle, Sussex, England. This is a medieval courtyard castle set within a large artificial lake, which serves as a moat. One of the last true castles to be built in England, Bodiam was constructed between 1385 and 1388 by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, who was permitted a licence from Richard II to crenellate his mansion house. Of symmetrical square design with round towers at the corners, the castle was entered through an elaborate system of portcullises, drawbridges and doors (not seen). It was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1926 by Lord Curzon.
