TANGIER, Va. – Pieces of abandoned mobile homes litter the northern shoreline of the Uppards portion of Tangier Island here October 14, 2016. This section of the island was once the town of Canaan, but due to land loss from erosion, subsidence and sea-level rise, the residents moved away to higher portions of Tangier decades ago. Scientists estimate the rest of the now inhabited island will become uninhabitable over the next 25 to 50 years if something is not done to help keep the island above water.
