City Centre Bus Lanes Suspended for experimental period, Liverpool, Merseyside, UK

CITY leaders look set to propose scrapping nearly all of Liverpool’s bus lanes. The move, to go before the cabinet next week, is understood to include getting rid of all but four of the 26 routes. These are Lime Street, The Strand, James Street and St John’s Lane - but a council spokesman said some would operate at different times than previously used. The decision to suspend the lanes last year provoked outcry from bus companies and passengers, as well as cyclists who say they feel safe using the lanes as they are protected from the dangers of cars and lorries. Opposition leaders said today they believed the routes that were to be kept were the ones that were most important to keep the city centre moving, but questioned how much consideration the council had given to what would be done with the now totally redundant lanes on the ways in and out of Liverpool.
