To the south and west of the city is the Wadi (valley) Hanifa (dark green), which the city is starting to spread across. To the north of the city is King Khalid International Airport, which opened in 1983. The dark green areas at bottom right are irrigated fields. The round fields are irrigated by centre-pivot irrigation systems. Image obtained by the thematic mapper on the Landsat 5 satellite on 26th July 1984.
