Luther Burns Papal Bull
The so-called "Exsurge Domine" was a papal bull issued by Pope Leo X on June 15, 1520. The pope issued it in response to Martin Luther, who would become a promiment leader of the Protestant Reformation, posting his 95 Theses in 1517. The bull demanded that Luther retract many of his statements, which the bull called errors, by December 20. Luther had no intention of doing so and on December 20, the day the time expired, Luther burned the bull publicly, as shown here in this illustration. On January 3, 1521, the pope excommunicated Luther.
