Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Small transistor welded to a circuit board. A transistor is made of a solid piece of a semiconductor material. The transistor is the fundamental building block of modern electronic devices, and is used in radio, telephone, computer and other electronic systems. Some transistors are packaged individually but most are found in integrated circuits. Transistors have a wide variety of uses in electronics including amplification, rectification and signal processing. Transistors have three wires attached to them, called the base, the collector and the emitter. The bipolar junction transistor (BJT) was the first type of transistor to be mass produced. Magnification: when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
