World War One (1917) - Women take over the work of men. Here a coal woman ,aka coal heaver and coal hewer in the UK, carries sacks of coal which the government had reduced in size to allow less strong individuals to be able to carry them. Women received lower wages for doing this same work, and some of the earliest demands for equal pay began at this time.
