TELEPHONE PROTECTION FOR OUTDOOR SERVICE A type of open space cut-out, which has been developedwithin the past year by the Western Electric Company andhas already come into extensive use on telephone lines inrailroad and commercial service, is the so-called No. 86type protector. This device is made in two forms, onewith a tin cover and the other with a cast-iron cover, known, respectively, as Nos. 86-A and 86-B. These coversare chained to the framework of the protector mounting,so that they cannot be lost through carelessness of thelineman. The protector itself is mounted on a porcelain base, through the bottom of which the leading-in wires are. Cut-Out with Protector Open brought in, and consists of heavy carbon blocks, as shownin the illustration. The spacing between these blocks regu-lates the voltage at which the protector operates. Undernormal conditions this is adjusted to discharge at 1000volts. The shape of the carbon blocks gives a variable gap be- August 12, 1911.] ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL. tween the ground block and the two blocks connected tothe line wire. The protectors are arranged so that carbondust carried across by the discharge will not clog the sparkgap, but will automatically drop to the bottom of the pro-tector. The No. 86 type protector, as is noted, is designed foruse both outside and indoors, and it is arranged so that itcan be mounted directly on the pole itself. In some casesit is desirable to have a protector which can be located inthis manner outdoors, although, as a general proposition, such a practice is not to be recommended on account ofthe additional maintenance dif
