. Railway and locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . ock wall flush with the surface, this con-troller being operated by a foot the gates are closed and the hand railsare down, and it is desired to cross onthe gates, the foot push is pressed andthe hand rails are raised by their is true not only of the hand rails on at the lower end. These chains are main-tained in a taut position when the gatesbehind are closed, and are lowered whenthe gates are opened for the passage ofa ship. The chains are raised and low-ered by a method similar to that followedin hydraulic elevators, with the additionalfeature that if a ship approaches the gatesat a dangerous speed and rams into thechain, the chain is paid out in such away as to gradually stop the ship beforeit reaches the gates. Lowering the chainfor the passage of a vessel and raising itagain after the vessel has passed is ac-complished by two motors; one drivingthe main pump supplying water underpressure, and the other operating a valvewhich controls the direction of movement. 1 V thhand rails will be lowered, i >r, if oneleaves the hand rails up and the gates areopened by the operator in the controlhouse, they will be automatically loweredso as to be out of the way when thegate is in the recess. When the gates areagain closed, the hand rails will auto-matically rise again if the foot controllerhas been operated in the mean time. Thehand rails cannot be raised when thegates are opened, and no harm results ifthe foot switch is operated while thegates are in the closed position. The chain fenders are stretched acrossthe canal in front of all mitering gateswhich can be exposed to the upper locklevel and also in front of the guard gates of the chain. These two operations arecombined in one, each motor beingstopped automatically by a limit switchwhen
