False-colour normal pulmonary arteriogram. Arteriography (or angiography) is the X-ray examination of an artery which has been outlined by the injection of a radio-opaque contrast medium. The iodine-based contrast medium (which is opaque to X-rays) is injected into the main pulmonary artery (pink swelling at centre right) via a catheter inserted into the groin. The medium fills both the right pulmonary artery (branching to left of image) and the left pulmonary artery (right) and their branches. The technique is used in the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, where a pulmonary artery is obstructed by a blood clot, often formed in a vein of the leg.
